VII welcomes aboard Eugene Richards

By scott.poniewaz | April 15, 2006

It was just the other week that a few of my friends and I were trying to pick our brains as to what agency Eugene Richards was a part of. Some were thinking he was still with Magnum and others thought he was riding his own wave as an independent documentary photographer. It turns out that Eugene Richards has decided to join the photo agency of VII, according to an April 14 press release from the agency.

The announcement was made during the VII seminar last week, which according to the press release also named James Nachtway, the focus of a recent documentary War Photographer, as president of VII. It will be interesting to see how VII moves forward. While organizations like Magnum seem to be lagging and stagnant, VII’s photographers seem to be producing progressive work that is pushing photography and telling notable stories. Eugene Richards joins the agency’s pool of talented photographers including James Nachtway, Lauren Greenfield and Antonin Kratochvil.

Richards has most recently authored and photographed The Fat Baby, a collection of social documentary stories that look into issues relating anywhere from family violence to gangs to medical care in Bosnia. He also photographed and wrote the book Cocaine True, Cocaine Blue, which takes a startling look into the world of drug dealing, inner city life and prostitution.

With a stint at Magnum, he recently left and is one of the prominent documentary photographers today in my mind. The intimacy and trust this man is able to exude in his work is simply amazing.

“I believe that the very purpose of our life is to seek happiness. That is clear. Whether one believes in religion or not, whether one believes in this religion or that religion, we all are seeking something better in life. So, I think, the very motion of our life is towards happiness…”
