Photo coming in Paddler Magazine May/June issue
By scott.poniewaz | April 17, 2006
I just got word back from an editor at Paddler Magazine that the May/June issue has gone to press and should be hitting the newsstands within the next week or so. Within those pages will be a photograph that they came to me for. The shot is of Milltown Dam about 8 miles up the Clark Fork River from Missoula. Last summer it was announced that the superfund site will be cleaned up and restored back to its natural state and this photo was during a press opportunity in preparation for that.
I got a call early one morning from my editor at the time, Courtney Lowery, while interning at New West Network. To my surprise it was a last minute invitation to take a helicopter tour of the Milltown Dam site with Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer. My first helicopter ride of my life flew by me and as I took the shots of the dam site, I pretty much forgot to look around and before I knew it, the ride was over. It was one of those things I have to be thankful for as a journalist, how many people can say they were invited by a governor to take a helicopter ride?
As I said, this was to prepare for the official announcement and plan for the dam cleanup that has taken over 20 years and still has many more before it is actually completed. The consideration for superfund status began around 1982 when it was determined that there was arsenic in the drinking water that has been linked to the mine tailings from Butte’s Berkeley Pit about 120 miles upstream and some may be from mining operations up the Blackfoot River. The dam is located at the junction of the two rivers.
While I could continue on this story for a while, I’ll let our local newspaper’s feature package inform you a little more if you are interested. They did a package entitled Two Rivers, Two Choices. Paddler Magazine will also have a piece on the dam and the clean up, so keep your eyes peeled for the new issue.
