May Day reminds many of childish ding-dong-ditch games and candy, but this year it brought forth hundreds of thousands of people nationwide that participated in rallies and protests. Most stayed calm, well as calm as thousands of people taking to the streets in some of America’s largest cities, including Chicago, New York City and even Missoula, Mont.

While unable to move about the country freely in the final week of classes, the Missoula rally and march turned out to be a bit of a different scene than the multitude of flags waving through the streets of the larger rallies. Many last minute cardboard signs instead replaced the flags with messages varying from “Deport Bush” to “Immigrants made the USA.”

The 60-75 people that participated marched from the oval of the University of Montana campus to the Missoula Courthouse, right on down Fifth Street and Higgins Avenue, both streets that became clogged arteries. Upon reaching the courthouse, skits were performed.

The day was meant to remind people what a nation without immigrants would be economically, but also was aimed at instilling pressure on Capitol Hill for immigration reform that would allow for a collection of immigrant workers’ rights in the United States for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in America.
