Thailand military coup allegedly in effect

By scott.poniewaz | September 19, 2006

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has declared Bangkok in a state of emergency as tanks have allegedly taken to the streets according to various news sources and clashed at the Government House. Thaksin is currently in New York City at the UN General Assembly, but intends on expediting his return flight to Thailand. It is being considered by many to be the beginnings of a military coup, but also believed to have been rumoured for several weeks now.

For more information head to either BBC news, CNN or the New York Times websites for up-to-date information as I head to bed for the night safely here in Udon Thani in the northeast. I just want to make sure everyone knows that I am safe and sound where I am, so there should be no reason to worry. I will be sure to keep you posted as things unfold, especially if the threat increases tomorrow.
